This quick weekend trip allows you to marvel at dramatic Northern landscapes, tour an iconic whisky distillery, immerse yourself in Edinburgh's vibrant culture and atmosphere, and search for Nessie in Loch Ness' dark waters. Though you'll have to be strategic with maximizing your time, it's still completely possible to see the best of Scotland over a short getaway. With proper planning, those 48-72 hours will provide endless Scottish magic you'll cherish forever.

TRAIN

Duration: From 4 hours and 10 minutes 

When travelling on this route, you'll board a train at London Kings Cross station, with the service provided by London North Eastern Railway (LNER), Avanti West Coast, or Lumo. If you’d like to maximise your time in Edinburgh, you could take the Caledonian Sleeper night train. 

COACH 

Duration: From 9 hours and 10 minutes 

For a hassle-free and budget-friendly travel option, consider taking the coach from London to Edinburgh. National Express offers convenient pickup from London Victoria Coach Station, providing a comfortable journey all the way to Edinburgh Coach Station, conveniently located in the city center.

Another option worth considering is Shearings a tour operator specializing in various holiday packages. They offer escorted tours, unescorted tours, short breaks, self-drive holidays, and river cruises covering destinations within the United Kingdom, Isle of Man, Ireland, and Continental Europe.

CAR

Duration: Around 7 hours 

The distance from London to Edinburgh is approximately 400 miles, making it a 7-hour drive on a smooth day without any stops.

While driving, you won't have the luxury of relaxing and admiring the scenery, nor can you enjoy onboard amenities like free WiFi or catering services. Additionally, you'll need to factor in petrol prices, adding to the overall cost of the journey.

Furthermore, both London and Edinburgh are bustling cities, so driving can be challenging, and parking expenses can be quite high.

PLANE 

Duration: Around 4 hours, including check-in times and travel to/from the airport

When flying from London to Edinburgh, you have three airlines to choose from: British Airways, Easyjet, and Ryanair. Each airline offers different departure airports in Central London. British Airways operates from Heathrow, London City Airport, and Gatwick. Easyjet flies from Gatwick, Luton, and Stansted, while Ryanair departs from Stansted.

Flight times typically range from 60 to 90 minutes, but it's essential to factor in additional travel time for getting to the airport, check-in, security, and baggage control. Most airlines recommend arriving at least two hours before your flight. Once you land in Edinburgh, it takes around 30 minutes to reach the city center from Edinburgh Airport.

When considering all these factors, the total travel time from one city center to the other is approximately 4 hours.

Exploring Scotland is all about the journey. While traveling between main attractions is easy, accessing remote areas requires more planning but offers ample rewards. Luckily, Scotland boasts an extensive transportation network providing many options. Public transport like trains and buses conveniently connect cities, towns, villages and ferry ports. For reaching the most isolated destinations and islands, traveling by car, ferry or plane is best. With proper preparation, the entire country can become your playground. Choose your preferred transport mode and embrace every minute of discovery along the way. 

Local bus services provide transportation between major Scottish cities, towns and villages. The four main operators of these bus routes are First, Stagecoach, Lothian Buses and National Express. Additionally, a number of independent bus companies contribute to the comprehensive public transportation network across Scotland.

While buses are great for traveling between well-connected destinations, having a rental car is ideal for getting off the beaten path and reaching remote areas of Scotland. Another transportation option is Uber, which operates in larger cities like Edinburgh and Glasgow. However, it is not available in rural parts of Scotland.

Village Hotel Edinburgh - A puzzling location on a busy road far from central Edinburgh. No walking access to attractions or dining, but excellent bus service outside provides easy 15 minute rides into town. Taxis take around 10 minutes for £10.

Mercure Edinburgh Haymarket - Fountainbridge may not top Edinburgh attraction lists, but the canal basin and Haymarket region is on the rise. Mercure recognized its potential early on. Just a 15-minute stroll to Princes Street and 5-minute cab from Haymarket Station makes exploring easy. Mercure reached this up-and-coming area before the crowds.

Apex Grassmarket Hotel - Boasting a premier location overlooking Edinburgh Castle, Grassmarket Hotel is immersed in an atmospheric historic plaza. Just a 5-minute walk to the Royal Mile, Greyfriar's Kirk and National Museum. 10 minutes to Usher Hall. Surrounded by lively pubs, cafes, and top cashmere boutiques. Right in the heart of the action!

Doubletree by Hilton Edinburgh City Centre - Deceptively convenient Bread Street lies between Lothian Road and Grassmarket, belying its worn facade. Just a short walk to Usher Hall, Old Town, and 10 minutes from Princes Street. Double bonus - two of Edinburgh's best restaurants, Timberyard and Castle Terrace, sit under 5 minutes away. Ideal for exploring dining and attractions on foot.

Black Ivy - Tucked away on a quiet Bruntsfield lane overlooking scenic Links, the neighborhood retains a village charm. Stroll 10 minutes through the Meadows to the Old Town or amble to Morningside's boutiques and cafes. With regular buses to Princes Street, location balances accessibility and cozy seclusion.

The Radisson Blu Hotel, Edinburgh - Despite its lively Royal Mile address surrounded by endless bars, cafes and restaurants, The Witchery offers a peaceful escape. Steps from major attractions, it provides easy walking access to Edinburgh's top sights. With transport links under 10 minutes away, you can enjoy the heart of the city in this hidden urban oasis.

Malmaison Edinburgh City - Enjoy ultimate convenience with airport trams and Waverley Station just steps away. Trendy restaurants like Dishoom and Wahaca are right in St Andrew Square. High-end shopping at Harvey Nichols and Multrees Walk just next door. And culture vultures will love the National Portrait Gallery behind the hotel. Couldn't be better located!

The Balmoral - Right next to Edinburgh's Waverley Station at the east end of Princes Street. Just a 5 minute walk to the National Gallery, shops, and Old Town attractions. Couldn't be more centrally located.

Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian - Commanding Princes Street's west end, Apex City is a shopper's paradise with major attractions an easy 15 minute stroll away. Convenient public transport options include bus stops just around the corner and the Princes Street tram stop 5 minutes off. An unbeatable location for retail therapy and accessing Edinburgh highlights.

Intercontinental Edinburgh The George - Set on prime shopping street Princes Street, The Balmoral is surrounded by restaurants and bars with easy walking access to top attractions. Trams and buses are under 5 minutes away. Some rooms boast castle views, perfect for enjoying fireworks during Edinburgh Festivals and Hogmanay. Take the scenic West Highland Railway through 23 miles of raw landscape. Outlander fans will recognize Craigh na Dun filming sites. Traverse lower trails and cycle routes, leaving the challenging high mountain climbs to experienced hikers.

Edinburgh's Princes Street offers major retailers and German Christmas markets.

George Street tempts with trendy clothing alongsidebars and restaurants. 

Grassmarket/Victoria Street house independent designers, vintage clothes, crafts and quirky stores.

Stockbridge mixes galleries, eateries and jewelers with artisan bakers and markets on weekends. And posh Bruntsfield provides a pleasant neighborhood for souvenir browsing among shoe boutiques and cafes.

I'm disappointed my favorite local eateries from past visits to this lovely city have since closed their doors. 

I've compiled a fresh list of tempting new restaurants to try on my next trip! Though I'll miss those previous dining memories, it's exciting to discover and explore these novel culinary gems. 

With so many innovative menus and cozy atmospheres to sample, I can't wait to create memorable meals at these spots, which will become my newest beloved haunts.

• Stroll down the Royal Mile or pay a visit to Holyrood Palace, the British monarch's official Scottish residence. Alternatively, immerse yourself in Edinburgh's wealth of museums and galleries.
• After grabbing lunch at one of the cafes along the Royal Mile,  a walk through Holyrood Park, scaling Salisbury Crags, and reaching Arthur's Seat offers panoramic views of the city.
• If you missed out on visiting Edinburgh Castle on your first day, this is your final opportunity before departing on the late afternoon train back to London.
